Derry Village: A Historic New Hampshire Community

Derry Village, part of Derry, New Hampshire, has roots dating back to 1719 when Scots-Irish families settled the area known as Nutfield. This settlement, which included present-day Windham and parts of Manchester, Salem, and Hudson, became Londonderry in 1722. On July 2, 1827, Derry was incorporated as a separate town. The village is known for the planting of the first potato in the United States in 1719. A key cultural landmark is the Robert Frost Farm, where the famous poet lived from 1900 to 1911. The Derry Museum of History, located in the historic Adams Memorial Opera House, preserves the town's heritage.

Derry's development has been marked by important milestones. Pinkerton Academy, founded in 1814, is one of America's oldest private schools still operating. The town's industrial past focused on linen and leather production in the early 20th century. After World War II, Derry experienced suburban growth, aided by the construction of Interstate 93. The town has adapted to changing times, as seen in the conversion of an abandoned railroad branch into a rail trail. This project involved significant concrete work for bridges and path surfaces. Today, Derry is New Hampshire's fourth largest municipality. Its population growth has stabilized since the 2000s, following significant post-war expansion. Derry maintains a balance between its historical character and modern development, defining its identity in the 21st century.
